Romancing the Cello – GFW ACC

One of the most celebrated cellists on the world’s concert stage and known as a ground-breaking soloist, Ofra Harnoy is recognized (and criticized for it early on) as one of the first classical artists to delve into cross-genre recordings with her albums of music by The Beatles. Harnoy’s love of all genres of music inspired the repertoire she has chosen for this tour.

Ofra Harnoy celebrates Romancing the Cello with a tantalizing program of choice selections from her extensive discography. Performing alongside Harnoy is her husband and musical partner, multi-instrumentalist Mike Herriott. Harnoy and Herriott play works by Telemann, De Falla, Popper, The Beatles, Gershwin, and a few select pieces from Harnoy’s most recent album “On the Rock,” a musical celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This performance has something for everyone from the poetic imagery of “She’s Like the Swallow” to the pyrotechnical “Danza Ritual del Fuego” by Manuel de Falla, from the stately “Canonic Sonata #1” by Telemann to the optimistic“Summertime” from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

Accompanying Harnoy’s inimitable warmth and richness of the cello, is Herriott’s piano, trombone, and flugelhorn, combining to create a tapestry of sound to fill the heart and stimulate the imagination. Ofra Harnoy and Mike Herriott’s shared love of life, music, and each other are center-stage on their Romancing the Cello concert tour.
